Defined Benefit Plans vs. IRAs

As the chart below shows, the percentage of U.S. retirement assets in defined benefit plans has been on the decline for decades. However, they still account for roughly 39% of the total. IRAs are the next largest cohort with roughly 30% of retirement assets and have been steadily growing. While the shift away from defined benefit plans is clear, there are still plenty of people who were promised set pension returns in decades past.
